What is aloSIM?

aloSIM is a travel eSIM brand run by AffinityClick Inc., an Ottawa software company shipping communications apps since 2013. aloSIM itself launched in 2022.

That lineage explains the product better than any feature list. AffinityClick’s first business was Hushed, a virtual second number app, still the group’s top grossing product.

So when aloSIM hands you a free phone number, it is not licensing it from a partner. It is giving you a seat in its own older business.

The phone number side is mature. The data side is a younger reseller product with the usual constraints. The catalogue runs single country plans, Europe and Asia regional bundles, a Global plan, and daily cap plans sold under names like Weekender and Month Abroad.

Is aloSIM compatible with my phone?

You need an eSIM capable handset that is not locked to a carrier. A locked device cannot install the profile at all.

The 10 second check: dial *#06# and look for an EID under the IMEI. An EID means an eSIM chip. No EID means no eSIM, whatever the spec sheet says.

How to get started with aloSIM

Most aloSIM reviews skip this in two sentences. It is where the one star reviews come from, so we are going slowly.

Step 1: Get the app

Three ways to buy: the iPhone app, the Android app, or the website.

Use the app. It is the only route with automatic installation on iPhone, and the only place you can see which host network a package runs on before you pay.

Browser checkout works, but hides the one screen worth looking at. Download it at home, not on airport wifi.

Step 2: Create your account

Email and password, then card details. No phone number is required to register, which is sensible for a product sold to people who are between phone numbers.

Do it on wifi before you fly: account creation and payment both need a connection you may not have on arrival.

Step 3: Choose and buy your plan

Three things to do here that most buyers skip.

First, tap “View” under “Network” on the package. aloSIM tells you which operators that eSIM can actually use.

Japan is KDDI, Thailand is AIS, India is Reliance Jio, Mexico is Telcel, Spain is Orange, the UAE is du, Vietnam is MobiFone, Singapore is StarHub, and the UK, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Denmark, Ireland and Austria lean on Three. Almost nobody else in this category will tell you that.

Second, read the caveat attached. Each package “typically works on 1-3 supported networks in a country, but not all of them”. You are buying one operator’s footprint, not a national roaming basket. If that operator is thin where you are going, so are you.

Third, check the shape, not the price. Daily cap plans hide their allowance behind a “See limitations” link. Fixed data plans do not.

Step 4: Install the eSIM

Three routes, all under two minutes: automatic install (iPhone and iPad on current iOS, handled in the app), QR code (every eSIM capable device), and manual entry of the SM-DP+ address and activation code.

Do this on strong wifi. The profile downloads here, and a dropped connection mid download is a common failure.

The platform difference behind most complaints. On iPhone your package “may automatically activate during installation” if you are already in the right country.

On Android, “your data package won’t activate until you complete the eSIM activation steps“.

Pixel and Galaxy owners assuming iPhone behaviour are the people writing “it never connected” reviews.

Install once, and only once. One install, one device. Delete the profile, or change phones mid trip, and you cannot put it back.

Step 5: Switch it on when you land

Open Settings, Mobile Data and select the aloSIM line.

Turn Data Roaming ON. Not optional, and the most common cause of a dead eSIM.

Set aloSIM as your default data line, and turn roaming OFF on your home SIM.

Still nothing? Set the APN to alosim in both the name field and the APN field.

Leave network selection on Automatic.

The APN step is worth memorising. It sits in aloSIM’s own troubleshooting list and fixes a real share of “data is on but nothing loads” cases.

Our honest take on the setup:

Fast and well documented on iPhone. More fragile on Android, where activation is a manual step the marketing does not emphasise.

Instructions also run in English only, which shows up repeatedly in negative reviews.

What is the aloSIM app like?

Clean, and unusually informative for a budget reseller.

Tiers carry names rather than numbers: Weekender, Extended Stay, Great Escape, Month Abroad. Friendlier to read, worse to compare, because the daily cap sits behind a link instead of on the card.

Three screens earn their place: the Network view that names the host operator, My eSIMs with its Top up button, and the aloCASH balance.

One decision creates a support load: Calling and Texting pushes you into a different app entirely.

aloSIM coverage: where it works

The honest answer on aloSIM countries is that there are three different numbers depending on which product you buy, and the gap between them catches people out.

Country, regional and global plans

Single country plans are where aloSIM competes. Regional plans cover 35 countries in Europe and 20 in Asia.

Global is where marketing and product part company: the brand advertises “200+ international destinations”, and Global lists 148 countries.

Check the regional maths first. Europe 10GB / 30 days is $3.60 per GB. Spain alone, 20GB / 30 days at $22.50, is $1.13. One country, buy the country.

Calls, SMS and phone numbers

The aloSIM phone number is the headline feature and the part most likely to disappoint you, so read this twice.

The eSIM itself is data only. No calls, no SMS. True of Airalo and Nomad too.

The number comes from Hushed, the sister app: a real, dialable US or Canada number from 300 plus area codes, working over wifi or data.

There is no minutes allowance and no text allowance. You get $3 of pay as you go credit, depleting at rates aloSIM does not publish.

One professional review put the credit at $1, so treat the figure as one that has moved.

Redemption is six manual steps. Buy an eligible package, open Calling and Texting, tap Redeem, confirm your email, watch for the setup mail, then open Hushed and tap Add Number.

Two apps, two accounts, one number, and it dies with your data plan unless you start paying Hushed.

Then the part that decides whether this matters to you. Hushed is direct about VoIP limits: its numbers are “NOT guaranteed to work with third-party verification due to blocks implemented by certain services”, and it names banking among the blocking categories.

No free replacement when a code fails to arrive.

The honest version: an excellent way to give a hotel, a driver or a tour operator a number that reaches you. Not a way to receive your bank’s two factor code. Still free, where Airalo’s equivalent runs $6 to $59.

Hotspot and tethering

Allowed on every plan, no surcharge, no published cap. A real advantage over providers who restrict tethering on unlimited tiers, and it makes the 50GB European plans useful for a couple sharing one line.

aloSIM speeds and signal

Speed on any travel eSIM is the host network’s speed, not the reseller’s. Because aloSIM names the host, you can predict the answer before you buy.

We run Ookla Speedtest on the network the eSIM actually attaches to, in a named location, and record the operator alongside the number.

A speed figure with no carrier attached tells you almost nothing.

What these speeds mean for you?

Ignore the two big numbers. 584 Mbps in Ghent and 505 Mbps in central Bangkok are best case 5G in dense city cells. They tell you Orange and AIS are fast, not that aloSIM is.

The 15 to 25 Mbps range from Chiang Mai and Phu Quoc is the number to plan against. Enough for maps, messaging, video calls and 1080p streaming.

Not enough for a 4K download over coffee, and no travel eSIM is.

The throttle aloSIM will not put a number on

The sharpest criticism in this aloSIM review, and it is about disclosure rather than the product.

Every aloSIM “unlimited” plan is a daily cap plan: a set amount of full speed data each day, best supported at 3 GB, then reduced speeds. Normal enough.

Airalo does it, Nomad does it.

What is not normal is the silence about what comes next. aloSIM’s own explanation contains no figure. Speeds “could be reduced”, the reduced speed supports “light browsing or messaging”, and the allowance “will vary depending on your destination as well as local network policies“.

Third parties trying to fill the gap disagree. One pricing aggregator lists the post cap speed at 1 kbps across every country page.

Two independent reviews put it at 512 kbps. Those differ by a factor of 500, and only one describes a working connection.

Why it matters: at 1000 kbps you can still load maps, message and book a ride. At 512 kbps you message and slowly load a page. At 1 kbps you have no internet at all, which is a cutoff wearing a throttle’s clothing.

We will not pick a figure, because aloSIM has not published one. The decision that follows is clear: if you need unlimited, buy it from a provider that writes the floor down. aloSIM’s fixed data plans are strong, and a fixed 20GB plan usually costs less anyway.

Three things fall out of those tables.

The floor is genuinely low. $3.50 buys a week in Thailand or a single day in the UK, Spain, Italy or France. Airalo’s entry plans start at three days, so for a long layover aloSIM is simply cheaper.

The $0.50 per GB headline has a condition. It needs 50 GB burned inside ten days, which is 5 GB every day. The real best value for a normal trip is Thailand 20GB / 30 days at $0.98 per GB, and the data planner will tell you which of those you are.

Regional pricing is uneven enough to change where you buy. India’s daily cap plan is $99.00 against $66.50 in Australia, a 48% premium.

Mexico’s 20 GB is $46.00 against Thailand’s $19.50 for the same shape.

What aloSIM users actually report?

Sentiment sits at 4.0 on Trustpilot from around 2,200 reviews, 4.5 on Google Play and 4.6 on the App Store. The Trustpilot split is 64% five star against 13% one star: a polarised product that mostly works, and fails completely when it fails.

Failures cluster in two places, both predictable from the architecture above.

First install on Android. Pixel and Galaxy models appear by name. A traveller in Las Vegas could not attach on a Pixel 7.

Another could not activate on a Pixel 10. That is the manual activation step from Step 4, a documentation problem more than a network one.

Coverage outside major metros. Newfoundland, rural Iceland, Barbados, Ghana, Lebanon, Patagonia and parts of Switzerland all appear as places the line did not hold, which is what buying a single host operator looks like.

The positives are equally specific. In Iceland the eSIM “worked as soon as we touched down in Reykjavik” and held “in all but the most remote areas”.

In Portugal, 5G “with decent signal strength” five minutes after landing.

Top ups, aloCASH and the ESIMTWEAKS code

Final verdict

aloSIM is a good travel eSIM with one excellent habit and one bad one.

The excellent habit is carrier transparency. Where nearly every reseller hides the operator behind a brand name, aloSIM tells you it is AIS in Thailand, KDDI in Japan, Telcel in Mexico and Three across a third of Europe. That lets you make an informed decision instead of a hopeful one.

The bad habit is silence on the throttle. Both direct rivals write down a 1000 kbps floor. aloSIM writes nothing, and outside estimates range from usable to unusable. That omission is the difference between four stars and this rating.

Underneath both, the product is solid at the entry end. Thailand at $0.98 per GB is competitive, the $3.50 one day European plans have no direct equivalent, and the Hushed number is oversold but still worth having.

Our recommendation: buy aloSIM’s fixed data plans, particularly in Thailand, the UK and the USA at lower tiers. Skip the unlimited tier until the throttle floor is published.
