GigSky Cruise eSIM Review 2026: Does It Work at Sea?
One night of roaming at sea can cost you $2,099 per gigabyte. This GigSky Cruise eSIM review breaks down whether a $56 plan really works at sea, where it drops out, and how it stacks up against ship Wi-Fi and carrier day passes.
September 14, 2026

GigSky’s Israel eSIM lineup mixes excellent daily bucket plans with overpriced fixed data packages. The daily 3.5GB plans offer competitive rates, especially the 15-day option at $0.81 per GB, while fixed plans cost several times more than rivals.
Pros
- Daily 3.5GB plans at $0.81 per GB over 15 days
- Works in nearly every country
- Reliable app and support
- One-day plan suits a single heavy day
Cons
- Fixed plans are overpriced (e.g., $36.49 for 10GB)
- Good and bad plans look identical at checkout
- No unlimited option
The dearest gigabyte you can buy in 2026 is on a cruise ship, on a phone left roaming overnight.
AT&T charges $2.05 per megabyte at sea if you have no package. That works out at $2,099 for one gigabyte. Roughly three hundred times what the same data costs on land.
AT&T and Verizon both sell a $20 a day cruise pass with 500MB of fast data, which is $40 a gigabyte and $140 for a week at sea. Ship wifi, which now runs on Starlink on most big lines, costs $20 to $49 a day per device.
Then there is the GigSky cruise eSIM. Its 10GB plan works out at $11.55 a gigabyte. It covers 280+ ships across 27 cruise lines. And the same plan keeps working on land in every port.

This guide explains how an eSIM for cruise ships actually works, where it drops out, what it costs next to everything else, and when the ship’s wifi is still your better bet.
The short version
Bottom line: the GigSky cruise eSIM is a real phone plan. At sea it uses the ship’s own mobile network. In port it swaps to normal local networks.
It is not a satellite eSIM, and it does not replace the ship’s wifi for the cruise line’s app.
For messaging, maps, email and a bit of browsing, it costs a fraction of what any carrier or cruise line charges.

| AT&T or Verizon cruise day pass | $140 | 3.5GB (500MB a day) | yes | no |
| Ship wifi (Starlink) | $140 to $343 | unlimited, shared | no | yes |

How the GigSky cruise eSIM works?
GigSky sells two kinds of cruise plan. Cruise + Land plans work on the ship at sea, then switch to local networks by themselves when you dock, across 200+ places on land.
Sea-Only plans work on the ship and nowhere else, which suits anyone who already has a land eSIM for the ports. Both come as a fixed pot of data or as a daily allowance.

A normal sailing goes like this.
| Where you are | What the GigSky line joins | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| At the pier before you sail | Local land network (Cruise + Land plans) | Normal 4G or 5G speeds |
| First 60 to 90 minutes after sailing | Nothing, usually | The ship’s mast stays off until you are clear of the coast |
| Open sea | Cellular at Sea (the ship’s mast) | 700 Kbps to 4 Mbps, slower for the first 20 minutes |
| Coming into port, inside about 12 nautical miles | Nothing, briefly | The mast goes off before the land network is in range |
| Docked | Local land network | Normal speeds again |
Two of those rows matter more than the rest. The ship’s mast has to stay quiet within roughly 12 nautical miles (22 km) of land, so it does not clash with networks on shore. That is why the first hour after leaving Miami, Southampton or Barcelona is dead, and why the signal drops again as you line up for the next port.
Every phone on the ship, on every network, loses the signal at the same moment.
Speed is the other honest number. The ship’s satellite link is shared between the wifi, the mast and the crew, and the mast gets a slice of it.
Four megabits on a good day and under one on a bad one. That is fine for WhatsApp, iMessage, email, maps, banking and a slow scroll through Instagram.
It will not carry a video call or a Netflix episode. That is the real ceiling of the product. If you want to stream at sea, you want the ship’s top wifi tier, and the table below shows what that costs.

GigSky cruise plan prices
These are GigSky’s list prices for the Cruise + Land plans. Every one of them drops 15% with code ESIMADVICE15 in the app or through the GigSky cruise plans page.
| Plan | List price | With ESIMADVICE15 | Cost per GB | Cost a day on a 7 night cruise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 512MB, 1 day | $18.99 | $16.14 | $37.98 | one day only |
| 1GB, 7 days | $28.04 | $23.83 | $28.04 | $4.01 |
| 3GB, 15 days | $55.24 | $46.95 | $18.41 | $7.89 |
| 5GB, 30 days | $65.99 | $56.09 | $13.20 | $9.43 |
| 10GB, 30 days | $115.49 | $98.17 | $11.55 | $16.50 |
The 5GB plan is the one to buy for a week. Five gigabytes of messaging, maps, email and photo uploads at sea and in port is plenty for one person, and at $9.43 a day it beats every ship wifi package on the market.
The 1GB plan is the right size if you mainly want WhatsApp to work and will do the rest through the ship’s app.
The 512MB one day plan suits a single sea day between two land eSIMs, and it is the worst value on this page.
Next to the carriers
| Provider | What you pay | Fast data | Real cost per GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| AT&T roaming with no package | $2.05 per MB | none | $2,099 |
| AT&T cruise day pass | $20 a day | 500MB a day, then 512 Kbps on some ships | $40 |
| Verizon cruise day pass | $20 a day | 0.5GB a day, then 3G speeds | $40 |
| GigSky 10GB Cruise + Land | $115.49 once | 10GB for 30 days | $11.55 |
Against the day passes, GigSky is about 70% cheaper per gigabyte.
Against plain roaming, which is what your phone falls into if you do nothing, it is more than 99% cheaper. That is the number that matters, because $2.05 a megabyte is what one night of roaming at sea will cost you.
Next to ship wifi
| Cruise line | Wifi a day, one device | 7 nights | GigSky 5GB, 7 nights (list) | You save |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MSC | $20 to $31 | $140 to $217 | $65.99 | $74 to $151 |
| Royal Caribbean (VOOM) | $22 to $29 | $154 to $203 | $65.99 | $88 to $137 |
| Carnival | $26 | $182 | $65.99 | $116 |
| Celebrity | $27 to $35 | $189 to $245 | $65.99 | $123 to $179 |
| Norwegian | $40 | $280 | $65.99 | $214 |
| Disney | $42 to $49 | $294 to $343 | $65.99 | $228 to $277 |
Ship wifi is priced per device, and that is where families get hurt. Four phones on Norwegian for a week is $1,120. Four GigSky 5GB plans is $263.96 at list, or $224.37 with the code.
The wifi is faster and unlimited, and for one person who wants to stream it wins on quality. For a family that just wants maps and messages to work, it loses on price several times over.
Where the cruise eSIM goes dark?

The dead spots are easy to see coming, which makes them easy to plan around.
From the moment you leave the pier until you clear the coast, the ship’s mast is off. Send anything urgent from the terminal.
The same rule bites on the way in, and on any leg that hugs a coastline.
A Norwegian fjords trip or an Alaska Inside Passage sailing spends long stretches inside that limit, and people on those routes see far less signal than they expect. A Caribbean or transatlantic route is the opposite.
Every phone on the ship joins at once, and speeds crawl until the rush dies down.
Royal Caribbean’s app, Carnival’s HUB, Princess’s Medallion and the rest all run on the ship’s wifi. Every big line lets you use the app and its chat without buying a wifi package. So join the ship’s wifi for the app, the daily planner and dinner bookings, and let the eSIM do everything else.
A Cruise + Land plan picks up the local network the moment you dock or step ashore. A Sea-Only plan does nothing on land, so if you buy the cheaper one, take a separate land eSIM for the ports.
Who should buy it, and who should not
| If you are | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A couple or family who want messages, maps and email to work at sea and in port | GigSky 5GB Cruise + Land | Cheapest per device by a mile, one plan for the whole trip |
| Sailing alone and mainly want WhatsApp | GigSky 1GB Cruise + Land | $4 a day, and the ship’s app covers the rest |
| Hoping to stream video or take work calls at sea | Ship wifi, top tier | The ship’s mast tops out at 4 Mbps |
| On AT&T or Verizon, using under 500MB a day, and want phone calls too | Carrier day pass | It includes calls and texts, which GigSky leaves out |
| On a fjords, Alaska or river route | A land eSIM for the region first | Much of the sailing sits inside the 12 mile limit |
That carrier row earns its place. GigSky is data only. If the whole reason you want a signal at sea is to take calls on your own number, a $20 a day carrier pass does that and this eSIM will not. If WhatsApp calls are fine by you, keep the difference.
Buy it online, not at the desk
Several lines sell GigSky on board, and you can buy it from the ship. There are two good reasons to sort it out before you sail.
The first is money. On board you pay full price. Online, code ESIMADVICE15 takes 15% off any GigSky plan. That is $9.90 off the 5GB cruise plan and $17.32 off the 10GB one.

GigSky Cruise eSIM Plans
Our GigSky promo code page tracks the current code, and our GigSky review covers the land plans in detail.
The second is the install. An eSIM downloads over the internet. Doing that on paid ship wifi or a slow mast is a bad moment to find out your phone needs a restart. Install it at home, on your own wifi, the day before.
One warning if you hold a premium Visa card. GigSky’s free Visa Infinite and Visa Signature plans are great on land, and we cover them in our GigSky review. But they leave cruise coverage out.
At sea the free plan does nothing, and the cruise plan is a separate buy. Your Visa discount does still work on it.
Setup checklist
Dial *#06# on your phone. If a line called EID shows up under the IMEI, your phone takes an eSIM. If not, our eSIM compatibility check covers your options.

| Step | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Buy the plan in the GigSky app or through the link above with ESIMADVICE15 | 15% off, online only |
| 2 | Install the eSIM at home on wifi | Saves a paid download on board |
| 3 | On iPhone: Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM. On Android: Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, Add SIM | Our eSIM install guide has screenshots |
| 4 | Set the GigSky line as your data line and turn data roaming on for it | The plan works by roaming, so roaming has to be on |
| 5 | Turn data roaming off on your home line | This is the step that stops the $2.05 a megabyte bill |
| 6 | Leave the plan switched off until sailing day | The clock starts when you turn it on, not when you buy it |
| 7 | On board, set network choice to automatic | The eSIM finds Cellular at Sea by itself once you are clear of the coast |
Step five pays for the whole thing. A home line still allowed to roam will join the ship’s mast on its own, and the bill turns up later.
Stick strictly to GigSky’s daily plans for good value; avoid the fixed data options entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Is the GigSky cruise eSIM a satellite eSIM?
No. Your phone joins the ship’s own mast, the one that shows up as Cellular at Sea or 901, and that mast sends its traffic over the ship’s satellite link. The eSIM is a prepaid roaming deal with the mast. No travel eSIM in 2026 links a phone straight to a satellite for internet on a cruise.
How fast is the GigSky cruise eSIM at sea?
Between 700 Kbps and 4 Mbps, with a slow patch of about twenty minutes each time the signal comes back and everyone piles on. That covers messaging, maps, email and light browsing. Video calls and streaming need the ship’s wifi.
Why does the eSIM stop working near land?
Ships have to switch their mast off within about 12 nautical miles of a coast, so it does not clash with networks on shore. The signal drops for the first hour after you leave port, and again on the way in to the next one. On a Cruise + Land plan the eSIM picks up the local network once you dock.
Does it work on Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian ships?
Yes. GigSky’s cruise coverage takes in Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Disney, Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity and MSC, among about 27 lines and 280+ ships. The app lists the ships under the cruise plan before you buy, so check your own ship there.
Can I use my free Visa Infinite GigSky plan on a cruise?
No. The free Visa Infinite and Visa Signature plans cover land only and leave cruise ships out. The cruise plan is a separate buy, and your Visa discount of 20% to 30% works on it once the card is saved in the app.
Is the GigSky cruise eSIM cheaper than ship wifi?
For messaging, maps and email, yes, by a wide margin. The 5GB plan is $65.99, or $56.09 with code ESIMADVICE15, for the whole cruise. Seven days of wifi on one device runs $140 to $343 depending on the line. For unlimited streaming, the ship’s wifi is your only option, because the mast tops out at about 4 Mbps.

GigSky Cruise eSIM Review: The Verdict
The GigSky cruise eSIM does what it says. It is a prepaid roaming plan on the ship’s own mast. It hands over to land networks in port without you touching anything. And it costs a fraction of everything else for the way most people actually use their phones at sea. It is slow, it is data only, and it goes quiet near the coast.
Buy the 5GB Cruise + Land plan for a week at sea, use the ship’s free wifi for the ship’s app, keep roaming off on your home line, and a seven night cruise costs you $56.09 instead of $140 or more.
